Online Degree – Why You Should Consider One Today

Whether or not to return to full time mainstream education with a view to improving future career prospects is not an easy decision to make. This is notably so for individuals with family and practical commitments as it is more likely to result in a temporary decrease in earnings if the full time option is chosen. Especially when such a financial sacrifice, albeit temporary, can endure for three, four or more years. This is one of the main reasons why more and more individuals consider the alternative route of studying, usually on a part time basis, for an online degree. To take this route to future improvement and success undoubtedly requires considerable perseverance and dedication but the benefits and rewards can be considerable.

To look at the history of online degree programs is both interesting and illuminating. The world’s first university level online distance teaching and learning institution was the Open University. It was set up in the UK in 1969. During the 1980’s, responding to a general increased desire, awareness and demand for alternative career advancement options, it introduced professional career training courses to complement the already established traditional academic courses on offer. Today, with approximately a quarter of a million registered online students, it is Europe’s largest academic institution.

Nowadays the concept of a genuine higher education online institution is common worldwide. There are quality institutions offering top class programs in all regions of the world. Also, due to a combination of past experience alongside ongoing innovative teaching and learning methods, in many ways online degree programs surpass traditionally established institutions in terms of benefits to the student.

It is no doubt true that, for most young people leaving school, the advancement into university life leads to a defining, enriching and rewarding experience. For young, relatively mature minded students with clear career ambitions and aspirations, the experience is enhanced even more. However, it also common for many young people to become easily distracted and thus get too consumed in the liberating social oriented aspects of university life. A reasonable, disciplined and determined attitude to study goals too often takes second place to various competing demands and desires.

On the other hand, surveys and statistics invariably show that those who are already in the workplace tend to focus sharply on how they can gain from online degree programs and then respond appropriately. At root, they have come to the point where they wish to improve their prospects in a marked way and have no desire to become distracted from that main, overriding aim. Added to this, the flexibility on offer means that, when opting for online study, other commitments involving family, work and leisure can all be satisfactorily accommodated. Also, during the course of study, there is often the opportunity to build a helpful relationship with one or more online tutors, alongside considerable help and back up resources to draw on. Finally, there are clear financial advantages involved, too. It is far cheaper and easier to finance part-time online degree study and often times reduced costs, bursaries, loans and other opportunities exist to help make it even easier and more affordable.

It is very clear, therefore, that opting to study for an online degree allows ambitious individuals to satisfactorily balance various commitments and still be able to improve their life prospects. It requires proper focus and long term dedication but it is, most certainly, possible. There are many institutions in the marketplace offering quality, career oriented courses. With so many benefits available the online student is assured that taking the alternative to formal, full time higher education provision is by no means a second best option.
